<p>Health and fitness are topics that are in everybody’s mouths. What’s the newest fad diet? Does it work? Where can you go for a workout? Are there workouts that guarantee weight loss. These are just some of the questions that people keep asking these days.</p>
<p>But even if it is the fad these days, only a few actually adhere to a healthy lifestyle. Most people will still eat junk and will still fill their plates with fats and carbohydrates. Most would still rather sit on the couch and watch TV than work out at the gym or do some jogging. Old habits, after all, die hard. But starting a healthy lifestyle is not really as impossible as you think it is. In fact, with commitment and discipline, you can actually start walking the road to health and fitness. It will be hard but just imagine the rewards that you will get in return.</p>
<p>People who live healthy will get to enjoy more of their lives, not only in terms of reaching 100 years old but in enjoying each moment of your life because you are illness-free. Often, people who eat right are more capable in performing their tasks at the office and are more able to get advancements in their careers. These guys do not take leaves of absence and when they do, they use it to have fun and unwind and not to recover from a bad illness.</p>
<p>People who eat healthy and work out will also have great bodies and are more physically attractive. They are more likely to have better sex life and more romantic involvements, which in turn can make them more satisfied with life. These things are chained situations. Start in a positive light and you will end with a positive light too.</p>
<p>But despite the numerous benefits that you get from living a healthy lifestyle, why do people still stick to their old habits. One of the reasons is of course the unwillingness. After all, who would want to quit something that you enjoy doing or eating? Most people will not be willing to part ways with what they have been so used to doing. Just imagine saying goodbye to a comfort food or a hobby that makes you happy, will you do it?</p>
<p>Another reason is perhaps the difficulty. Most people attempt to change their ways for various reasons, health problems, relationship woes, even financial but most of the time they don’t see their plans through. They will try for a week and perhaps continue for a couple of weeks and then go back to their old habits after some time. They do not continue with their plans. One of the main reasons why is the lack of desire. To be successful in combating a bad habit, you need to really want it bad enough. You need to make sure that every temptation will not serve as temptation. Sometimes, will power is not enough for this. You also need the support of the people around you. This is why a lot of the programs right now that are created to help people change have a network of support system that will help their members.</p>
<p>So if you want to live a life of health and fitness, make the change now. There are a lot of benefits to it. You just need to fully commit to it and create your own support system.</p>

<p>You cannot measure every morsel that passes your lips, but it is a good idea to measure most foods and beverages until you get a feel for portion sizes.</p>
<p>It is a supersized world out there, and most people are surprised to find that their idea of a single serving is actually two or three.</p>
<p>If you are into bells and whistles, there are food scales that are preprogrammed with nutritional information, as well as scales that will keep a running total of your daily food and nutrient intake for you. The only tools you really need, however, are a simple and inexpensive gram scale, dry and liquid measuring cups, and idea on reading food labels.</p>
<p>Among all of the mentioned tools, reading food labels seem to be the most effective way of determining the right kind of food to be bought in the supermarket. It lets you make sensible food selections. Through the “Nutrition Facts” section in a particular item in the grocery, you can identify the amount of serving sizes provided in that product.</p>
<p>With food labels, you can clearly understand the amount and kinds of nutrients that are provided in the item. Usually, it contains the information on saturated fat, sodium, total fat, fiber, and cholesterol amount “per serving.”</p>
<p>However, understanding and reading these food labels can be very perplexing. A typical consumer would definitely ask what those numbers mean and how it will affect her diet intake if ever she will religiously follow the serving guide as stipulated on the food label.</p>
<p>To further have a clear and more comprehensive understanding of the items stated in the food label, here is a list of things that you need to know:</p>
<p>1. Serving size</p>
<p>This is the primary item you will see in a food label.</p>
<p>The amount of servings stated in the food label refers to the quantity of food people usually consume. However, this does not necessarily mean that it reflects your very own amount of food intake.</p>
<p>Moreover, serving size determines the amount of nutrients that enters the body. This means that if you will follow strictly what the serving size is, you will obtain the same amount of nutrients according to the serving size that was given in the label.</p>
<p>For instance, if the serving size says one serving size is equal to 54 grams, that would mean you have to measure 54 grams and eat that and you have just eaten one serving. So to speak, the amount of nutrients stated in the food label is the same amount that has entered your body considering the fact that you have just eaten 54 grams.</p>
<p>However, if you have eaten everything, and the food label says that each pack is equivalent to 4 servings, you have to calculate the amount of nutrients that have entered your body. This means that if the food label says 250 calories per serving that means you have to multiply it to four to get the total amount of calories you have taken.</p>
<p>2. Nutrients</p>
<p>This refers to the list of available nutrients in a particular item. It is also where the nutritional claims of the product based on the recommended daily dietary allowance are stated. Usually, the nutritional amounts are based on both the 2,500-calorie diets and the 2,000 recommended dietary allowances.</p>
<p>In order to understand the numeric value of each item, you should know that the “% daily value” that the food label indicates is actually based on how a particular food corresponds to the recommended daily dietary allowance for a 2,000 calorie.</p>
<p>If in the event that you have purchased an item that has a dietary allowance different from the 2,000-calorie diet, you just have to divide the stipulated amount by 2,000 and you will be able to identify the “%daily value” for the nutrients.</p>
<p>3. Ingredients</p>
<p>This refers to the list of the ingredients that were used to manufacture the product. The listing is usually arranged from the main ingredients that have the greater amount by weight up to the smallest quantity. This simply means that the actual quantity of the food includes the biggest quantity of the main ingredient or the first item and the minimum amount of the very last ingredient.</p>
<p>4. Label claim</p>
<p>This refers to the kinds of nutritional claims of a particular food item. For instance, if an item says it is sodium-free, it has less than 5 milligrams per serving or a low fat item actually contains 3 grams of fat or less.</p>
<p>Indeed, reading food labels can be very tedious and confusing. Nevertheless, once you get the hang of it, it would be easier for you to watch your diet because you can already control the amount of food that you take.</p>

For example, if your goal is to exercise for thirty minutes each day, start small. The first week, make your goal to exercise for ten minutes each day. That’s manageable and you will succeed. The next week, add five minutes to your routine. Continue adding five minutes each week until you’ve reached your goal.</p>
<p>Identify the big changes you want to make to your lifestyle and create smaller goals that support your change. It’s much easier to achieve smaller goals than to make a huge lifestyle change. You’ll have a smoother road to success. And it’ll be easier to sustain your new lifestyle habit.</p>
<p>#3 Reward yourself</p>
<p>Making changes in your life is challenging. Take time to reward yourself for your successes. When you achieve a goal, even the small goals, treat yourself to something nice. Get a massage. Watch your favorite movie. Do something nice for yourself. However, make sure the reward supports your new lifestyle change.</p>
<p>For example, if you’re cutting out sugary snacks you don’t want to reward yourself with a sugary snack. Instead, reward yourself with an afternoon off from work, or a new gadget or pair of shoes.</p>
<p>#4 Make it easy</p>
<p>Some lifestyle changes feel complicated. In fact, many unhealthy habits became habits because they were easy. For example, going to the drive through for lunch is easier than planning ahead and packing a lunch. You’ll have more success if you can make adopting your new habit as easy as possible. For example, you might pack your lunch the night before and do your shopping on the weekend.</p>
<p>#5 Cut yourself some slack</p>
<p>Change can be challenging. Instead of feeling down or giving up when you struggle, give yourself a break. Acknowledge that you messed up. Then turn and face the challenge head on with a positive attitude.</p>

If you hate it then you’re not going to do it. There’s no reason to torture yourself. There are many fun activities that are healthy too. Consider:</p>

<li>Dance</li>
<li>Martial arts</li>
<li>Swimming</li>
<li>Walking/Hiking</li>
<li>Cycling</li>
<li>Yoga</li>
</ul>
<p>Make a list of the fun activities you enjoy or might enjoy. Look around your community for opportunities to explore or add these activities to your day.</p>
<p><strong>Step Two: Find small bits of time in your schedule to exercise</strong></p>
<p>The best way to make fitness a habit is to approach it realistically. Trying to exercise for an hour each day when you’ve never exercised before may be a bit too much. Instead, try to exercise for ten or fifteen minutes a day. Or if you’ve signed up for a class, then fit that class into your schedule once or twice a week. The other days, exercise for ten or fifteen minutes. Making exercise a daily habit makes it much easier to embrace permanently.</p>
<p><strong>Step Three: Celebrate your success</strong></p>
<p>Sometimes it’s easier to stick with a plan if you have something to celebrate. For example, after a week of successfully working out each day you might reward yourself at the end of the week. Find a reward that’s motivating and still supports your overall fitness goals. For example, you can get a massage at the end of the week. You might purchase a new fitness outfit.</p>
<p>Finally, consider tracking your success. When you can see what you’ve accomplished it can be extremely motivating. You’ll be able to see the progress you’ve made. Track the workouts you’ve accomplished. Track the weight you’ve lost. Consider tracking your feelings about each workout too. For example, was it easy or hard? What level of exertion did you feel? How did you feel the next day or after the workout?</p>
<p>Developing a realistic fitness plan is about managing your expectations. It’s about finding something you enjoy. Track and celebrate your success. Acknowledge that every day may not be perfect or successful but over time you can and will succeed. To your success!</p>

I keep peace and joy in my heart and mind at all times.  It is easy for me to stay peaceful because I have everything I need to retain joy.</p>
<p>Peace and joy are precious gifts that I appreciate each day.  They are far more important to me than materials things.  Peace and joy can be givien away and still retained by the giver.  They&#8217;re wondrous things to keep close to my heart.</p>
<p>Today, I appreciate the joy and peace my life has to offer.</p>

There is no question that there are several risk factors for type 2 diabetes that you need to be aware of. For one thing, if there is any history in your family of diabetes, you need to be on high alert from a much younger age. In other words, let your doctor know so you can get screened early and often, especially if a parent or sibling is diagnosed with Diabetes.</p>
<p>Obesity is another big risk factor for type 2 diabetes. In fact, a BMI of 27 or higher puts you at greater risk of developing the disease. Age is also another important consideration. If you&#8217;re over 45 years old, you are at higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Remember, though, that this disease can strike people who are younger also.</p>
<p>Ethnicity also plays a big role in the development of type 2 diabetes. African Americans, Pacific Islanders, Asian-Americans, Hispanic Americans and Native Americans are all at higher risk of developing this condition.</p>
<p>In addition to these risk factors, people with high blood pressure, high cholesterol or high triglycerides are also at higher risk. People who have low levels of HDL, the good kind of cholesterol, also have higher odds of getting type 2 diabetes.</p>
<p>Additional risk factors for this disease is lack of physical activity, previous history of abnormal blood sugar levels, history of gestational diabetes, history of delivering a baby weighing more than 9 pounds and polycystic ovary syndrome.</p>
<p>Please review these risk factors and assess your risk for developing Diabetes. Take action to lower your risk and work with your Health Care Practitioner to develop a plan.</p>

<p>November is the month of Nutritional Wellness.  And we all know that in order to take care of the Total Woman you must not only be well, spiritually, physically, and emotional but you need to feed your body the right nutrients.  Too many times we as women go on these fad diets to fit into a dress by a certain date.  But then after we achieve that goal (if we even achieve at all) we find ourselves back to that initial weight or maybe even more.  The reason for this is because we must look at &#8220;dieting&#8221; as an over all lifestyle change.  And in order to do this you must be aware of the basic nutrition needed for your body.  Below you will discover some information regarding your basic nutrition needs to get you started</p>
<p>Basic nutrition is made up of different food groups. There are 5 categories, grains, fruits, vegetables, meats, and dairy. They provide us with 5 essential nutrients. It is very important to your health to eat a good balance of these foods. Sometimes this balance is called the food pyramid. This pyramid gives us a rough idea of how many servings of each food we should be eating per day.</p>
<p><strong>Essential nutrients:</strong></p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><em>Protein:</em></span> This is used to build healthy muscle and also to repair muscle. We get this from; fish, milk eggs, cheese, yogurt, meats, pulses and nuts. These are the basic meats (pulses and nuts can be substituted for meats} and dairy foods. You can also get protein from Soy (soy bean).</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><em>Carbohydrates</em></span>: are found in all cereals, like bread and rice. They are also found in some starchy vegetables like potatoes and corn.</p>
<p><em><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Fats and oils:</span></em> can be found in dairy products like butter milk and cream. They are also present in meats and of course fried foods and those foods that have oil and fat (like butter) added to them. This group is a little tricky as there are good fats and bad fats present in foods that we should be aware of. It is important to cut out trans fats if possible and be careful not to eat too much cholesterol and saturated fat. Omega 3 and 6 are found in fish oils and are good for you in moderate amounts.</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><em>Vitamins and minerals:</em></span> These are found in many foods but mostly in fruits and vegetables. They can also be found in the water you drink. They are very important as they help every part of the body to function correctly.</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><em>Fiber:</em></span> is found in whole grains and pulses, fruits and vegetables. Although much of fiber is not digestible it forms bulk in our foods and makes our digestive system work better. It also gives us a full feeling and means that we eat less and do not get hungry as often.</p>
